Attractive Toppers For Your Window Dressing

Sally Horton

You've heard the expression "The icing on the cake," right? Well, window headers are that to your draperies. Sometimes, depending on the window, the topper might be all that's necessary. This is especially true in the kitchen, where privacy isn't so much an issue. Add headers or toppers to your window treatment for increased beauty.

Architectural Cornice

The most structured window topper is the cornice, which is essentially a wooden box that covers the curtain rod. You can choose to have your cornice covered in fabric that matches your curtain panels or leave the wood bare. If choosing the latter, the cornice adds architectural detail to your windows. You can have the wood painted to match the trim or stained to show off the wood grain. There are also different styles of cornices that match trim edging, such as bullnose and eased edge. The addition of a cornice can be formal or exotic, depending on the style you choose.

Formal Pleated Header

The header is a swath of extra fabric that hangs from the rod and over the top of the panels. This swath can lend a formal air to your draperies, especially if you choose a pleated header. You can select simple pinch pleated headers or ones with pencil pleats, which are a series of tight, elongated pleats. Another attractive style is the goblet pleat, which is constructed to create a well of fabric at the top. You can even stuff this well with batting for more fullness.

Casual Valance

A valance is a little like a header in that it's a swath of fabric that covers the top of the window dressing. However, a valance can cover the rod itself, and it can also stand alone. What's more, valances can have a more casual effect. For instance, Better Homes and Gardens describes a simple valance that's tailored for a kitchen window. The panel of fabric is essentially draped over four hooks to frame the window beautifully. Since there's no need for privacy from that window, this window treatment stands alone. For this treatment, choose a patterned fabric that matches your kitchen décor.

Pretty Swag

Another panel of fabric, window swags nonetheless differ from headers and valances. In fact, this panel gets draped across the top of the window. The fabric can be wound around the corner of your curtain rod or draped over tiebacks installed in the window corners. Either way, the center of the fabric hangs down in a pleasing arc, while the sides drape down as a frame for the window. Swags looks pretty alone or coupled with a tailored treatment, such as a shade or blinds.
