3 Lighting Design Tips To Make Your Bathroom Both Beautiful And Functional

Sally Horton

Bathroom lighting design is often neglected, and many homeowners choose function over form when they're designing the lighting scheme for their bathrooms. While function is vitally important for bathroom lighting (after all, you need to be able to see well enough to apply makeup or shave), it's possible to create a space that's beautiful as well with the correct lighting design. In order to create the perfect bathroom lighting design, follow the three tips below.

1. Use Recessed Lighting

Recessed lighting is the perfect choice for bathrooms for two reasons. The first reason is that moving your lighting into the ceiling frees up a significant amount of space. Bathrooms are often cramped, and removing fixtures helps your bathroom appear less crowded.

The second reason is that recessed lighting solves the conundrum of how to light your bathtub or shower — unless your bathroom has incredibly high ceilings, hanging lights or wall lights are simply not possible to use. Recessed lighting, however, is perfectly suitable to light your bathtub or shower as long as you choose a housing that's water-resistant. By using recessed lighting, you'll achieve maximum lighting coverage for your whole bathroom. As an added bonus, recessed lighting also has very little glare.

2. Eliminate Shadows

For excellent bathroom lighting design, you'll need to eliminate as many shadows as possible. Plumbing fixtures and cabinetry provide ample opportunity for shadows to be cast in your bathroom, and multiple shadows can make your lighting look chaotic.

In order to eliminate shadows, you'll need to provide light sources at multiple levels. In addition to your overhead lighting, you'll also need wall sconces next to your vanity to provide light at mid-level. If wall sconces won't fit in your bathroom, you can use pendant lighting at mid-level instead — these lights plug into an electrical outlet and can be attached to a nearby wall. For the lower level, consider lighting your bathroom using LED light strips near the baseboard. Providing light at every level minimizes the number of shadows cast in your bathroom, giving it a cleaner and more cohesive design.

Eliminating shadows has a functional purpose in addition to an aesthetic one. If you're shaving or applying cosmetics, you need excellent lighting in order to see what you're doing. Relying on overhead lighting typically means that you'll have a shadow cast over your face, which can influence the perceived color of your cosmetic products or make it difficult to shave. When your entire bathroom is well-lit, you'll have an easier time with your morning routine.

3. Opt for a Cooler Color Temperature

Finally, make sure that all of the light bulbs in your bathroom have a high color temperature. You'll find the color temperature of a light bulb on its package. It's measured in kelvin. Lower numbers are considered to be warmer colors — light bulbs with these color temperatures have orange or yellow hues. High numbers are cooler colors, like white or blue.

Warm colors are considered to be more relaxing, which is why cooler colors are typically better for the bathroom — they'll help you wake up in the morning. In addition, high color temperatures are closer to natural daylight, which helps to make sure that your makeup will look great once you leave your home. Lower color temperatures, with their orange and yellow hues, will greatly influence the way that cosmetic products look in your bathroom. Cooler colors are more neutral.

If you're having trouble with your bathroom lighting design and can't find out how to create a well-lit bathroom with minimal glare, contact a lighting design service in your area. They'll survey your bathroom and tell you what changes you can make in order to create a space that's both functional and aesthetically beautiful.
